The passage of tropical waves will strengthen the rains and thunderstorms this week

QCOSTARICA – The national meteorological service, Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN), forecasts rainy afternoons this week due to the passage of two tropical waves and the proximity of the intertropical convergence zone.

The passage of the eleventh tropical wave in the coming days will bring heavy precipitation over most of the country.

The constant entry of humidity should generate fog banks from the early hours of the morning in the mountain ranges of the central valley, as well as vertical cloud fields in various sectors of the national territory, which are a source of showers and lightning.

The tenth tropical wave of this month will cross the country on Tuesday afternoon and night and Wednesday morning, which is why the IMN requires special precautions in particular in the mountainous sectors of the north, Sarapiquí, Bagaces, La Cruz, Cañas, Cartago, Cerro de la Muerte, Talamanca, Valle del General and neighboring sites, due to the high levels of soil saturation they present.

Showers are also expected in the mountains of the Caribbean, reported Gabriela Chinchilla, IMN.

Precipitation amounts were not as high as previously thought, as peaks in the Pacific were 35 to 50 liters per square meter.

For this second half of the week, the arrival of tropical wave n ° 11 of the season is expected, moderately reinforcing the rainy conditions in the Pacific and the Central Valley.

The month of June, the first month of the Atlantic hurricane season, ended Wednesday with four hurricanes that mainly affected the northern hemisphere and had no influence on the Central American isthmus.

Cyclones Ana, Bill, Claudette and Danny have already formed, the latter still affecting eastern Georgia, United States, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Last year so far, only three cyclones Arthur, Bertha and Cristóbal have formed, with more damage than this season.

Last year, record numbers were reached with the formation of 30 cyclones, including 14 hurricanes and seven of which reached the major hurricane category, with associated winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour, including Eta, in November 2020, which indirectly but strongly hit Costa Rica.
